Marnhull Cricket Club

Marnhull has had a cricket club for one hundred and twenty years at various grounds in Marnhull but currently is based at the Recreation Ground, Marnhull. There are three adult sides and three Junior sides. Marnhull Cricket Club aims to promote cricket on a competitive level relevant to all abilities and to promote cricket to young people in the area.

After four years as Chairman Rob handed over to Les Elsworth in October 2006. His final report as Chairman appears below.

Chairman’s Report 2006

The committee set itself the following targets for the year:

1 That we should negotiate with the Parish council as to taking over the contract to mow the grass on the Recreation Ground.

We entered into an agreement with the Parish council commencing March 06 to maintain the grass cutting from a period of March to October/November for the sum of £1900. (Copy of this agreement attached to this report). I would like to thank Mike Tewkesbury, Mike Ryde and Tony Clarke for all their sterling services. We simply could not run the contract without their contributions. Given the extraordinary generosity of time the team has freely given, the next committee may like to think of awarding honorariums to the team in recognition of their vital contributions.

Alex Johnson, the second XI captain, steers his side to victory.2 To support the three adult teams.

I am happy to report that all three teams have been a credit to the club and have played cricket in a fair and competitive way. I would congratulate the Sunday side for winning their league. My thanks to all three captains, but in particular to Alex Johnson (pictured left) who after two very successful years is standing down.

3 To complete the pavilion.

This is almost complete. There is a little tiling to be done and some plastic tiles to be laid. I would ask again for some help in completing this. We were given £250 by the Fest last year which we have so far spent £80 on tiles/adhesives and grouting. I have ordered a ‘Match Officials’ sign for the door at a further cost of £20. The remainder we agreed we would spend on blinds for the windows which the new committee may want to do or give me a mandate to order.

4 To support all Youth Teams.

With the help of Jon Young, Les Elsworth, and the retiring Welfare Officer Debby Hasted, last season saw 45 junior club members enjoying their cricket. There are a number of Under 15 cricketers who will filter into the adult playing sides next season. It was heartening to see Jack Mogridge and Andy Binnington score maiden centuries this season.

I have enjoyed the last four years of being chairman and thank all those who have supported me. I wish the next chairman every success and look forward to seeing the club continue to flourish in future years.
