A Brief History of Methodists in Marnhull

The term 'Methodists' was a nickname applied to a revival movement in 18th century Britain, based within the Church of England and led by, among others, the brothers John and Charles Wesley.

John Wesley (1703-1791), the great preacher, challenged the religious assumptions of his day, urging his congregations to 'Trust in Christ, Christ alone for salvation'. His vision, determination and faith inspired people to re-assess their lives and renew their relationship with God.

Although Wesley visited North Dorset many times, preaching in both Stalbridge and Shaftesbury, there are no records indicating he preached in Marnhull. The first Primitive Methodist Chapel was built here in 1864. This community flourished and in 1898 it was decided that a larger building was needed and in December 1899, the new Methodist Chapel was opened. In May 1900 a new organ was purchased for £65 and this organ is still in use today.

Marnhull Methodists Today

We believe that God loves everyone and that He sent his son, Jesus Christ to guide us through this life so that we may have eternal life. He cares for us, helps us and loves us as we try to live our lives as He would wish us to do.

Friendliness is our watchword and a warm welcome awaits you. Worship is held every Sunday morning at the Methodist Church in Burton Street, between 10 and 11. Just turn up at the service or you can ring 01258 820203 or 820245 for a lift or for someone to go with. Every second Sunday is our Family Service aimed at children in particular but which appeals to all the family from grandparents down.

Sometimes we, the congregation, do our own thing by creating and presenting the service and at certain times of year, such as Christmas and Easter, special services are held. Tea, coffee and biscuits are usually on offer after every service as we catch up with each others' news.

The Girls' Brigade meets in our Community Hall every Wednesday. Their artwork can usually be seen in the hall and very good it is too! SNAP, a Christian Youth Group funded by the Scripture Union, meets in the Hall after school on Fridays.

Other regular Hall users are the Brownies who meet every Tuesday, the Bridge Club Tuesday afternoon or Wednesday evening and the Mothers' Union, one Wednesday a month.

We put on fundraising events for charities and to maintain the Church as well as, at present, raising money towards the current refurbishment of the building.

All the churches in Marnhull, Methodists, Roman Catholics and the Church of England work closely together, cooperating, helping and sharing where they can.

News

In December 2005 work started on an exciting major refurbishment of the Methodist Church. When finished, access and the entrance will be improved, the interior will be lighter and brighter, the meeting rooms and hall will be improved and new toilet facilities provided. The building will then meet the standards required under disability legislation

The project should be competed by May, when church members will start wielding paintbrushes to help finish the job! Opening events are already being planned and news about these will be posted on the village website and in the Marnhull Messenger.

Over £2,000 raised at Marnhull Methodist Church Exhibition and Gift Day on 17th June 2006

This event was held to raise funds for the Marnhull Methodist Church, which has recently been refurbished and now meets all legal requirements for access.

We had a wonderful day. As you can see (below) The Rev. Richard Westwood enjoyed playing his saxophone and Jeanette, Lisa and baby Emma had happy smiles! The exhibition was very popular and the exhibits were of a very high standard. There are so many people in the village with hidden talents. It was really lovely to see so many enjoying the exhibition as well as the refreshments and general companionship.

An enormous 'THANK YOU' to everyone who supported the day by kindly loaning their work and for all the donations we received - it is truly appreciated. The Hall and Church are used regularly by individuals and groups, including children's parties and for other social occasions, so many people will benefit from your generosity.
